Overview

This Comprehensive Whitewater Kayaking Course is a 7 day program for people who want to take up kayaking seriously as a lifestyle activity. You start from scratch and, by the last day, you are choosing your own lines and paddling the rapids of the Ganga yourself, with our safety kayakers close by for rescue support. No earlier kayaking experience is needed.

The first four days build the foundation: boat control, paddle strokes, wet exits, rescues and your first rapids. The last three days are where this course goes further. You work on ferry techniques and the eskimo roll, learn to read the river, and finish with an independent river run.

Why take a 7-day kayaking course in Rishikesh

Skills that feel solid in calm water often disappear in the first rapid. A week on the river gives you time to repeat the basics until they are automatic, and then to use them on bigger water. The Ganga at Rishikesh is a clear water, pool drop river with rapids that are challenging yet forgiving, which makes it a very good place to learn. The course is run from October to June.

What you'll learn

  • Kayaking gear, boat fit and safe handling of your kayak
  • Wet exits, bow assisted rescues and eskimo rescue
  • Forward and turning paddle strokes, edges and leaning
  • Ferry glides and ferrying across currents
  • The eskimo roll, practised in calm water and then on the river
  • Reading the river: spotting eddies, currents, waves and obstacles
  • Choosing your own line and running rapids independently

How the 7 days are structured

Days 1 to 4 teach the core skills and take you through your first whitewater runs. Day 5 is about ferry techniques and the eskimo roll. Day 6 is about reading the river, with more river runs to apply it. On day 7 you run the river independently, finding your own lines, while our safety kayakers provide rescue support.

Which kayaking course is right for you?

If you only want to try kayaking for a few hours, start with a single day of Discover Kayaking in Rishikesh. If you want to learn the basics of whitewater kayaking over four days, the Basic Kayaking Course in Rishikesh is a good fit. Choose this 7 day course if you want to go all the way to more intense and independent river running in one trip.

Where the kayaking lessons happen on the Ganga

Each day starts at Tapovan, Rishikesh. The first sessions are held in the calmer water near NIM beach. As your skills grow, we move to longer river runs on the Ganga, and we go further upstream for the bigger rapids in the second half of the course.

Our kayak school and instructors

TEAM 4 ADVENTURE has been teaching whitewater kayaking in Rishikesh since 2003. Our instructors and safety kayakers stay with you on the water throughout the course, teaching you step by step and keeping the river runs safe.

After the comprehensive kayaking course

Once you complete the course, you can join our kayaking day trips and expeditions and keep building your river experience. You also become part of our community of paddlers who return to Rishikesh every season to paddle together.

Detailed Itinerary

01

Gear, Safety and First Strokes

We begin with an introduction to the course and your kayaking gear before we reach the water. In a calm area of the river you practise floating and swimming in your gear, wet exits, and the paddle strokes that move and turn the kayak, so you can feel how the boat responds to every movement you make. We repeat these basics many times and finish the day with bow assisted rescues. It is a long day and we keep it fun.
02

Moving Water Basics

We revisit the previous day's skills and take them into moving water. You learn to lean the kayak, make your first ferry glides across the current, and practise eskimo rescue, which is an assisted way of getting upright again after a capsize. The day ends with a short river run over a few easy rapids.
03

Your First Whitewater Run

With the basics in place, you run a Class II section of the Ganga along with our team of professional kayakers. This is where the skills from the first two days begin to work together on a real river.
04

Class II+ Rapids

We go higher up the river today and run rapids up to Class II+. The rapids are bigger and the pace is faster, and it makes for an action packed day. By now you have the foundation, and from here the course takes you further than a basic course would.
05

Ferry Techniques and Eskimo Roll

Day 5 is for the skills that turn a beginner into a confident paddler. We work on river ferry techniques, using the angle of the boat and your paddle strokes to cross the current without being swept downstream. We also practise the eskimo roll, first in calm water and then in the current, so that a capsize becomes something you can fix on your own.
06

Reading the River and More River Runs

Today you learn to look at a rapid before you run it. We point out eddies, currents, waves and obstacles, and talk about the line a paddler would choose and the places to avoid. You then run more of the river and use what you have learnt, with our instructors guiding you and discussing each rapid with you.
07

Independent River Run

On the final day you put everything together. You find your own lines and run the rapids yourself, while our safety kayakers stay in position to give rescue support whenever it is needed. It is the day you prove to yourself that you can read the river and paddle it, and it is a fitting end to the course.

Yes. We spend time on the progression for eskimo roll right from day 2 and we give a dedicated focus on day 5, first in calm water and then in the current. Rolling takes practice and some people need longer than others, so we help you build it up step by step and do not promise a perfect roll in a single day.

You will be able to handle your kayak confidently in moving water, and execute self rescue in basic situations, read a rapid and choose a line, and run the rapids of the Ganga yourself with rescue support nearby. It is a strong base for joining our kayaking day trips and for continuing to learn on other rivers.

Yes, with the right training and supervision. The Ganga in Rishikesh has rapids that are challenging yet forgiving, and the course starts in calm water before moving to bigger rapids. Our instructors and safety kayakers stay with you on the water, and all kayaking gear is provided.

Whitewater kayaking is still an adventure sport. If a participant is not comfortable in water, our lead instructor may restrict them to easier sections or transfer them to a more stable double seater inflatable kayak for the river runs.

Every participant receives a TEAM 4 ADVENTURE souvenir certificate on completing the Comprehensive Kayaking Course. It is a certificate of course completion, and is not a certificate for use for employment or a professional kayaking or instructor qualification.

Quick drying clothes/swimming costume for kayaking, waterproof floater kind of sandals with a secured back strap, retainer strap for shades or prescription glasses, cameras, sun protection/block cream, moisturizer, change of clothing to wear after kayaking, towel, toilet kit etc. Warm clothing would be needed from mid October to mid March.
